9/11/01 - 9/11/21

Brothers & Sisters -

As we arrive at the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, may we continue to honor our brothers & sisters across the Hudson who made the ultimate sacrifice, and for those who we have since lost to 9/11 related illnesses. May we never forget these selfless heroes who were lost that fateful day.

For those of us that responded on 9/11/01 and the days that followed, we will never forget our service, nor will the memories of 9/11 ever leave us. Whether you responded with your department, with NJ-TF1, or on your own, your commitment to duty and to help others remains honorable 20 years later.

To the new generation of firefighters who may have been in grammar school or barely old enough to remember that day, it is my hope that you listen to the stories and learn about the experiences of your brothers & sisters who were there, the responsibility will eventually rest on your shoulders to “Never Forget”.

I was just a young firefighter myself as I worked the pile in 2001 and will always remember a salty veteran FDNY FF who said to me “don’t ever forget this kid, don’t ever forget it”. Although I never knew his name, nor would I ever see him again, I never forgot his words, and I never will forget them either.

Sadly 9/11 did not end in 2001, nor will it ever. Brothers & sisters are still passing from 9/11 related illnesses 20 years later, and our work will never be done. It is now our duty to preserve the benefits that have been fought for and to continue to educate our members to utilize them.

As we work our shifts this weekend, and as we hold our respective 9/11 memorials this Saturday, let us all remember why we are doing it, and let us dedicate our labors to those who we have lost to the 9/11 attacks and to 9/11 illness in the 20 years since.
