Women’s History Month: “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”

Although many names of women who made history have been lost to time and have not been able to be kept for record, here are some that can be celebrated.

Other than Molly Williams, who we learned to be a previous slave, who became a member and firefighter of Oceanus Engine Company in New York City, there were other women. Girton Ladies’ College of Great Britain had an all women’s volunteer fire brigade from 1878-1932. Between 1910 and 1920, Silver Spring, Maryland and Los Angeles, California had women volunteers. In the late 1920’s Emma Vernell became a member of the Westside Hose Company #1 (Red Bank) at the age of 50 after her husband died in the line of duty. She was the first woman to be officially recognized as a firefighter in the state of New Jersey.

This weekend, Daylight Savings Time begins and we spring forward. We want to make it a habit that when we change our clocks, we’re also checking the batteries on our smoke alarms and replacing them as needed. Also, check the date of your smoke alarm to ensure it’s within the 10 year life span. Check the batteries and date of your CO detectors. Be Fire Safe in your home and review your escape plans with the family. We always want to be proactive and know how to keep our family safe, message us if you have any questions! #daylightsavingstime #htfd #springforward #springiscoming ... See MoreSee Less
